Housing for Young People
Research, and our own experience, shows that young people are particularly disadvantaged in the housing market. They are often unable to obtain a mortgage, the rate of Housing Benefit is less that for older people and the rent level is restricted. Many landlords will not take people aged under 25.
Key House provides a range of supported housing for people aged 16 to 25 who would otherwise be homeless. We have a 12 bed hostel which can take people on the day of referral if a vacancy exists.
Each resident has their own room with ensuite bathroom and fridge/freezer. There is a shared kitchen and lounge. Residents are responsible for their own shopping cooking etc. The hostel is staffed during office hours and at night.
Support plans are agreed on an individual basis with each resident and help is available with claiming benefits, managing independence and finding somewhere permanent to live. Staff will also give support and help in accessing other services.
Other properties include 3 houses - each with 2 people sharing. Two of these have their own ensuite bathrooms and 6 self contained flats. Staff visit these properties to provide support.
Referrals can be made via the hostel 01535 680677 or via the advice office 01535 211311 or by calling into our advice offices. These can be from other agencies or self referrals. Apart from the age limits there are no restrictions, except where there are concerns that the health and safety of staff or residents may be at risk. In this case a risk assessment will be made.
